Coming up at the end of May is the TESL Toronto Spring conference. English Central is proud to sponsor the conference again this year – watch out for an exciting goody bag for all attendees. We will also be exhibiting so we hope you will come by to see all that is new and noteworthy and also to say hello to Nicole and Calin.
Chicago is one of our favorite cities and so we have more than just the convention to look forward to next month.
As is our habit, we will be exhibiting at the convention. Please be sure to come by our booth to say hello, check out our new resources and claim some SWAG for yourself. Also, if you are the type who enjoys presentations made by intelligent and witty people, be kind to yourself and come to one or both of our presentations.
What Innovation in the Classroom Can Look Like
3:00 – 3:45 PM, Wednesday, March 28
E263 (McCormick Place, Lakeside Center, East)
Buzzwords come and go, as do arguments for pedagogical shifts. What if innovation in the classroom involved the marriage of solid teaching principles and genuinely useful content and skills development for 21st century students? In this session the presenter examines some materials that facilitate positive innovation in the classroom.
Critical Thinking, Skills, and Language Development in EAP
E263 (McCormick Place, Lakeside Center, East)
Work on global skills, like making presentations and writing essays, must be done in tandem with the development of critical thinking and subskills (e.g., using intonation patterns expressing attitude and using hedging structures). In doing this, the new edition of Skillful excels in preparing students for their future studies.

Empathy in Action: Social Pedagogy and Public Advocacy for English Language Learners
English Central is proud to be a Silver Sponsor of this year’s NYS TESOL Conference and Carrie is very much looking forward to seeing you there (if you are going to be there, of course; she has many skills, but it would be difficult for her to see you if you weren’t there). Come by, chaeck out our books and SWAG and say hello.
This year’s conference will be held at the Santa Clara Convention Center and the theme is “The World is the Classroom: 21st Century Teaching and Learning.”
English Central will be exhibiting, bringing lots of great books and some nice SWAG too. Make sure you check us out if you are going to be there.
We are proud to announce that our old friend Lindsay Clandfield will be giving a workshop at our Toronto showroom titled What we talk about when we talk about interaction. Lindsay will explore “interaction” – what it means, what forms it can take (in the classroom and online) and its implications for the classroom. For more details, please see the link below.
To register, please call 416-850-0833 or email us at email@example.com. Space is limited, so if you are interested, please RSVP ASAP!
TESOL approacheth again! We are super excited that it will be in Seattle this year, just down the road from the Pike Place Market. Hello tasty seafood! Of course, we are looking forward to the conference as well.
This year we are taking an exciting (to us at least) new (to everyone) approach to our booth. We will also be giving out free copies of our new game, Jetstream and Turbulence, so be sure to check us out. We also hope you will join us for one or both of our workshops (if you respond to bribery, let us tell you that you will get a free book if you come).
Title: Take your students to TASK: the Key to Success!
Date: Wednesday, March 22, 2017
Time: 11:30 AM – 12:15 PM
In this session we will examine how carefully designed activities in The Transferable Academic Skills Kit give students the skills that they lack but sorely need – such as critical thinking, presenting, researching and referencing – to succeed not only in their post-secondary studies but in their future careers as well.
Title: Students and Learning: the Whole Experience
Date: Friday, March 24, 2017
Time: 9:30 AM – 10:15 AM
Do you think your students would be better off if they were fully engaged in class, learned really useful and natural language, gained cultural awareness and became more fluent speakers? Find out why it is not as tall an order as it sounds: join us in exploring Jetstream.
ITBE’s 43rd annual conference, “Meeting the Challenge”, if quickly approaching. Senior ESL Specialist for Illinois Ellen Zlotnick will be exhibiting and also presenting on the highlights of our current catalog. If you are attending, we hope you will stop by our booth to say hello to Ellen and, if you are the awesome person we think you are, attend her workshop.
This one is a first for us. The University of South Carolina runs the National Resource Center for First Year Experience and Students in Transition. The Annual First Year Experience Conference “provides an ongoing forum where higher education professionals can share experiences, concerns, and accomplishments related to supporting student learning, development, and success in the first college year.”
We are excited to be attending and exhibiting this year, to learn and to spread the word about the Transferable Academic Skills Kit.
Our showroom is closed for the holidays and will reopen for business on January 3rd. However, customer service and shipping/receiving will be operating on December 28th, 29th and 30th.
Thank you for your business in 2016 and we wish you the best for 2017!
